Our little Maestro

Mason is 2 months, yay! He is now 12 lbs 8 ounces (3 lbs gain from last month) and 24.25 inches long. We have already starting packing up clothes that are too small for him, some newborn outfits that he didn't even get a chance to wear. 3-month old outfits will not fit for much longer either.

At our 2-month check-up today, Mason got his first shots. Poor little guy had 4 shots after being awaken from his little nap. Couldn't someone figure out a way to just combine them in one shot?? Do they get paid by the tear?

What is worse than seeing your little baby cry? It's seeing his father tear up from his son crying. Next time I think I'll do this part without Daddy.

One of Mason's favorite activities is to watch his Symphony in Motion mobile. Our friends Jef and Michele recommended it as their 6-month old daughter Josie loves it. It plays music while little animals and balls spin around. Mason can lay in his crib and watch it for 30 minutes at a time.

Here is a video of him watching his mobile and conducting the music. Watch our little Maestro.

And here he is just enjoying the mobile...

Mason's many moods

Activity time

Mason sleeps less during the day these days. We are trying to fill his awake time with activities: watching the mobile, watching the ceiling fan, listening to music, talking to him, playing on the activity mat, etc. Here is a picture of him on the activity mat with Sasha near by.

Visiting Daddy at work

Mason got to visit Daddy office in Boulder today and had lunch on Pearl St. Mall. We are getting used to bringing everything Mason may need on a trip like this (diapers, wipes, bottle, formula just in case, pacifiers, a change of clothes, burp cloths... did I forget anything?)

Working on a smile

Mason prefers to smile when the camera is not pointed at him...

Night and Day

Mason is 6 weeks old today. Time flies!

And here is where we are:

  • Nights and Days - He is able to distinguish his days from his nights (probably for the past 3 weeks). He normally wants to stay wide awake during the days, and he likes to look around and listening to our sounds/music before his nap. At night (after 11 pm and before 9 am), he will feed and go back to sleep without crying! I watch him move on the video monitor, but he always falls back asleep.

  • Crying - He cries mainly when he has gas or when he is hungry. Mylicon helps him with the gas, but doesn't eliminate his pain completely. His fussiest time is normally in the late afternoons and early evenings.

  • Breastfeeding - I am still breastfeeding, which I enjoy (except for the middle of the night feedings). I am not sure how much he is eating (3+ ounces per feeding), but he is growing, has plenty of pee and poop diapers, and seems happy. I pump so he can get 1 or 2 bottles per day, so Bill and my parents can feed him while I rest or run errants.

  • Feeding Schedule - He feeds 7 times per day. He has been feeding 7 times per day since week 2 or 3. We feed on a combination of a flexible schedule and watch for his cues (per Baby Wise). Actually Mason's pediatrician Dr. Steitz is in the practice with Dr. Bucknam, author of Baby Wise. Dr. Bucknam visited Mason a few times while we were in the hospital.

  • Formula and Bottles - We have supplemented with formula a few times, when I was unable to pump. He goes between formula and breast milk, bottle and breast feeding with no issues. Transitioning in the future to just formula and bottle will not be an issue.

  • Always on the move - He has amazing neck strength to hold his gigantic head up (it even impressed Dr. Steitz in his 1-month check up), arm and leg strength. He is always moving, even in his sleep. He likes sleeping with his arms out of the swaddle (since he was born). Although we tried many swaddles in the first 2 weeks, the Muslin swaddles are the best and is the only type of swaddles we use now.

  • Sleep - In the middle of the night, he normally feeds twice (around 2 or 3 am and again around 5 or 6 am). One night last week, he fed around 12 am and slept until 5am! We have been trying to repeat that ever since. Hopefully we will have a blog about that milestone soon.

Parents first outings

Bill and I had out first outings since Mason's arrival. Mason takes a bottle of breastmilk once or twice a day, and my parents are more than happy to watch and feed Mason, giving us the freedom to escape for a few hours at a time. Last Saturday, on July 28th, we joined our friends at a Poker party for the evening. It gave us the chance to catch up with friends we hadn't seen for a month. This past Saturday, we went to see a movie. Bill had a growing list of movies he wanted to watch. I was resisting going to the movies, since I have a tendency to fall asleep in the movies when tired - I didn't want to pay $10 for a nap! However, I couldn't resist seeing the latest Harry Potter.
