Portland... the land of composting, recycling bins larger than your trash bins, where you raise your own hens and grown veggies in your backyard, and where ice cream shops talks about donation parts of the proceeds to the orangutan preservation... Sounds like an episode of Portlandia, but all true experiences from our trip.
We went to Portland (Vancouver WA right across the river from Portland) to be with Bill's family. Bill's sisters Heidi and Holly and their families live there, Shawn and Lena, Helen and Jack came in from Atlanta. In total 7 cousins ranging from 3 years old to 19 years old, 8 siblings and their significant others and Helen and Jack.
Booking a 10 PM flight from Denver that landed in Portland after midnight was not my brightest moment. We didn't get into our room until 1:30 AM. But it all worked out. We stayed at the Homewood Suites by river and 5 minutes from the Rhodes/Bolte homes (Heidi and Holly live back to back to each other). We stayed there last time and loved the space, the free hot breakfast and friendly staff.
Mason and Audrey warmed up to the cousins right away, having last seen them a year and a half ago when Ben, Candler, Haylie and Tommy came to visit us in Colorado. Nikki didn't come since she was already in college and hadn't seen the kids for 3 years, but the kids also warmed up to her and Audrey enjoyed baking various types of cookies with Nikki.
We cooked, ate, dined out (Castagna, Lucky Strike, Burgerville, Salt and Straw) and we spent lots of time playing games. Some of us saw Les Miserables, a great movie! I'm a huge Hugh Jackman fan and Bill told me after the movie I will have to fight him for Hugh from now on. :-)
Bill noticed he had forgotten his sunglasses on our way to the airport in Denver, but then he remember where we were going. We were not expecting any sun. But the weather was surprisingly nice and the sun even made an appearance a couple of the days. Nice enough for a hike of Beacon Rock.
Tommy took some professional photographs of the whole group and each family. I will share those once they are ready.
We can't wait for our next trip.
