Learning to bike

We have been trying to teach/encourage Mason to learn how to bike without his training wheels.  He has been scare to take them off, and our first excursion to the park a couple of weeks ago ended in tears.  To be fair, the path to the park is long and not the easiest to learn on.  By the time he got there, he wanted nothing to do with the bike.

We decided that a better plan was to drive him to an open parking lot.  The Avaya (previously Lucent) building is only a mile away and has a gigantic parking lot that sits mostly empty these days.  It is a perfect place to learn to bike.

Michele and Jef posted a video of Josie conquering the bike without training wheels a week ago, and we showed it with some encouragement that he could do it too.  I added to icing by letting him know we had a LEGO castle set that we have been waiting to give him (it was one of the used sets that went with the Christmas castle set he got from Santa) and we told him he would get in once he learned to bike.  That got him pumped up!

In less than an hour, first learning to cruise and balance without pedals down a gentle slope, this is the video we took!  Yay!!  We went back the next day for more practice and he learned how to get started without us holding or pushing him.

This afternoon he got his LEGO set, and promptly finished its assembly.
