Camping at Turquoise Lake

We went car camping with the kids for the first time over 4th of July with the Bienzles and the Forsbergs.  The 2-night trip is all we could book (I didn't realize camping spots in popular spots would go a year in advance) and 2 days is as long as I could go without a shower.

We had been to Turquoise lake 7 years ago, and it is a great spot only 2.5 hours from Denver, right next to Leadville.

We had two camping spots back to back for the 3 families, which ended up being perfect.  We divided up the meals between the families, Jef made gourmet hobo packs of chicken curry, I made breakfast burritos with chorizo, potatoes, eggs and bacon, completed by Jef's green chili, Bill made excellent coffee for us...  Needless to say, we didn't lose any weight on this trip.

It was a bummer we couldn't have a campfire.  The 2-burner full-size camp chef stove we picked up for $99 paid for itself!  We even made s'mores on it.

We even rented a canoe, which we transported on our minivan.  I pulled over a couple of times on the way up to the mountains because it moved a little.  We did a better job of securing it on the way back.  It was worth the trouble of transporting it, as we all took turns going on the lake with the kids.

The kids (Josie 6.5, Mason 6, Gavyn 5, Audrey 4) had a great time together!  They are already asking for another camping trip.  3 canines (Sasha, Willie and Sammy) all did great too.

Michele was the driving force pushing us to plan a camping trip, her first.  She is a city girl and was a little concern about the bears, which we didn't see any.  But she heard Sasha moving around in the middle of the night (our tents were close to each other) and thought she had heard a bear, keeping her up most of the night!  First night was rough, kids were too excited and noises were new, they woke up at 5:45 am, but second night was great and everyone including the dogs were passed out and even rained as we slept.  Audrey even took her first nap in a hammock.

The 5 loads of laundry with a lot of pre-soaking, washing 7 pairs of dirt covered shoes, 10 or so mosquito bites and all the packing and unpacking were all worth it!  We will do it again!
