Fall Soccer

This Spring, I thought of signing Mason up for Soccer. I called about a month before the start of Spring soccer, but it was already too late. Silly me, I didn't realize how quickly Soccer spots filled up. I quickly made a note on when Fall Soccer sign up started, and I must have been the first one to turn in Mason's application. :-)

Mason had his first game on Sep 10th. He is in a U5 (under 5) boys team of 6 players called the Coyotes. Coach Dean originally signed up to help as an assistant coach, but got the coaching job because they were short of volunteers. His son Tristan plays in our team. They play every Saturday for about an hour (30 minutes of practice and 30 minutes of game), 3x3 configuration, and a chaos of kids running around with coaches following them to give them direction. There is no score keeping, other than Bill does keep score on his iPhone (hehe). What is the point of playing if you don't know who won, right?

Mason is very excited about playing Soccer. Most importantly, he is having a lot of fun. All the boys in his team get along well. We told him the 3 rules: 1) have fun; 2) no hands; 3) no crying. There is plenty of crying in adult soccer, and we don't want to propagate that.

It became clear after the first game who the high scorer would be. This boy named Ethan on our team is an amazing player, scoring 9 out of the 10 goals in the first game. Perhaps because he has played soccer a couple of season now and has older brothers who also play. If he has the ball, he runs, dribbles and won't stop until the ball in in the goal! Pretty amazing as he can kick into a relatively small goal from 15 feet away.

Ethan was late for the second game, missing most of the practice. Bill asked the coach half worried and half joking "where is Ethan?". But he showed up, scoring 7 of the 8 goals our team had!

Here is a video of Mason almost scoring a goal. He is getting better every week.
