Trip to Atlanta

We just got back from a lovely week in Atlanta/Gainesville GA. Our annual trip is normally earlier in the Summer, but due to my work changes this year, we had to move our trip to end of August. It turned out to be a great time to travel (less busy as many kids are back at school).

Audrey hadn’t been in a plane since I took her to LA in early Feb. Although she is fully into her terrible twos, she is a better traveler. The plane to ATL had a monitor and free TV on each seat, so we were able to tune into Nickelodeon. She eventually fell asleep for the last hour. Doesn’t she look comfy?

We spent the first few days in Atlanta with Nai Nai and GrandPa Jack. Aside from Mason’s stomach ache the first night (he ended up throwing up in the middle of the night), which we attributed to swallowing some swimming pool water, the rest of the stay was great.
We went swimming every day. Our friend Maress and her two girls (Hannah 6 and Elise 3) came for a visit. Here are a couple of pictures of the kids together.

Helen and Jack had scheduled a photo session with Hector for all of us. The previews on his digital camera looked gorgeous; I can’t wait to see all the pictures! We will share when they are available.

The highlight was going to the Georgia Aquarium and seeing the dolphin show. It was my third or fourth trip to that aquarium, and it is still spectacular. The kids loved seeing the dauphins and all the fish.

At the end of our visit, I wanted to go by the Ocean Voyage tank one more time (the big tank with the whale sharks, manta rays, other rays and sharks, gigantic groupers). As we got to the front of the big glass, they were having an unscheduled feeding of the fish. The presenter described the feeding, the fish and tank, and as she was wrapping up she asked if there were any SCUBA divers in the audience. Bill raised his hand. She told him the aquarium offers SCUBA diving in the Ocean Voyage tank and to see the SCUBA crew. Bill went to ask, as he was curious of the price, but it turns out they had some last minute discounts and he could do it with a group that day, in 15 minutes at 3 pm! The experience would last 2 ½ hours and he wouldn’t enter the tank until 4 pm. It wasn’t an experience we could pass up, but the kids weren’t going to last for another 2 hours. Audrey was already passed her nap time. So, I took the kids home as Bill got ready for his dive.

It isn’t hard to watch the kids alone. But the hardest part was to get to the car because they had closed the closest access from the parking structure to the aquarium, and we had to walk in the heat carrying Audrey and making sure Mason kept walking behind me (I realized Bill has the parking ticket 1/3 of the way to the parking lot, so I had to call him and go all the way back to pick up the ticket and start all over). Helen was able to go back to aquarium and catch Bill diving. We will share the video from the dive once we upload that to YouTube.
